BMX XXX

Introduction

Today, we’ll take a look at a past game that caused stirs all around. From the stirring of soccer moms to the stirring in young boys’ pants, Acclaim was trying to be edgy with a title called BMX XXX. It ran off the same Dave Mirra engine that has been used for extreme BMX gaming. The ideas and rumors leading up to the game’s launch in November 2002 made perfect use of the ESRB rating system. A huge opening to games using adult-laced, raunchy, perverted, sex-starved humor and situations looked like it found a start in BMX XXX. However, do cheap sex thrills carry enough weight to make a game good? Can it override gameplay and graphics, if need be?

Gameplay

Although BMX XXX is similar to the Dave Mirra games, it is not. For starters, there are no professional riders available in the game. You have to take to the streets with novelty riders you would associate with inner city and prostitution rings. Have you ever seen a crackhead do a 540 Superman off an outhouse? I bet that bike is stolen. Each rider has his/her own style of bikes and unlockable clothing. For example, the Amish biker rides around on a bike carved out of wood. The clothing gets racy; from lingerie to dominatrix style garb. This is a driving point in trying to unlock items in the game – where can I find a smaller thong for my stripper. The characters don’t have any special moves or animations that would distinguish them from the others. You can, however, create your own XXX rider. This option has some clothing and facial variations, but it’s not too deep to spend ungodly amounts of time trying to replicate yourself.

The game lacks levels and has eight different environments. You can ride in such locations as Brooklyn, Syracuse, Las Vegas and more. The environments are large, which is one of the few pluses this game has going for it. When you start off on a level you do not have a timer limiting you to the amount of time you have to pull off the various challenges. You are only timed on the competition boards. Otherwise, you can ride around the board until you smack up your rider, killing off your health meter. There are no health power ups to increase your health. Most of the challenges you come across will start with a cutscene of a bystander on the streets, using explicit language telling you what they need done. Some of them are amusing but are not really considered adult humor. It’s the type of corny toilet humor found on every playground in America. The challenges will have their own timer and you can only do one challenge at a time. Some of the challenges will include picking up prostitutes for a pimp, or dragging some poor guy around in a port-a-potty.

I did not have the pleasure of trying out some of XXX’s multiplayer modes. Apparently, there are some interesting game modes that were new and intriguing back then. There is a mode where you play to strip in a game, sort of like the basketball game HORSE. For example, if I backflip off the half pipe and grind down the box into a flatland manual, then the next person needs to do the same to better it. There is also a sniper-style game where one player will be stationary and can fire a sniper rifle or bazooka at the other rider. The rider needs to collect certain items before being annihilated beyond recognition.
